Lomi-Lomi

Lomi-Lomi is a gorgeous, healing and embodied experience. The whole body is massaged in flowing, spiraling rhythmic waves of movement derived from traditional Hawaiian hula dance and bodywork.

There are many styles and family forms of Lomi-Lomi in Hawaii and further across the Pacific islands. Most are kept within local communities and rarely passed on.

One exception to this was Kahu Abraham Kawai’i who taught a form of Lomi-Lomi he called Temple-Style or Kahuna Bodywork. This style was developed from his own experience and his knowledge of Hula and Lua martial arts which allowed him deeper insights on how energy moves and how to master those movements with posture, positioning, placement and rhythm. It is from this lineage that I practice through the teachings of Louise Kleu here in Ireland.

Lomi-Lomi is considered to be a moving prayer, used to restore fluidity and balance in a person’s being with the use of continuous, flowing strokes which nurture the entire body.

Lomi-Lomi flows from the Aloha Spirit and practice of unconditional love and compassion.

Lomi-Lomi helps replace the imprints of painful and inappropriate touch with pleasurable and respectful touch.

Lomi-Lomi is all about flowing movement which allows depth and pressure to arrive naturally without use of force.

Lomi-Lomi is performed with minimal draping of the receiver to facilitate bodywork on large portions of the body and generally is performed with a heavy application of oil.

Gentle stretches of the body and easy joint rotations can also be used to assist the release of tension and enhance the flow of energy.

The Hula derived movements expressed rhythmically through the hips, forearms and hands create gentle waves all over the body that fluidly penetrate down through deeper layers. Different parts of the body may be massaged at the same time, which assists the receiver in relaxing totally.

Lomi-Lomi is the ground, the ocean through which all that is alive and sensual can flow.
